Addressing and eliminating the social stigma and perceived stigma connected to mental illness has been recognized as an important part to addressing the education of mental health points. In the United States, the National Alliance of Mental Illness is an institution that was founded in 1979 to represent and advocate for victims fighting mental health points. NAMI also helps to educate about mental sicknesses and health issues, while also working to remove the stigma attached to those disorders corresponding to anxiety and melancholy. Research has proven acts of discrimination and social stigma are associated with poorer mental health outcomes in racial (e.g. African Americans), ethnic (e.g. Muslim girls), and sexual and gender minorities (e.g. transgender individuals). A stigma is defined as “a mark of shame related to a selected circumstance, quality, or individual.” Stigmas are used particularly when it comes to the mentally disabled.
