We define the syndromic case detection rate as the number of confirmed COVID-19 instances in a week divided by the scale of the ILI surge that week. The syndromic case detection fee varied by state and over time (fig. S5). Our estimated syndromic case detection charges increased over the month of March; this was anticipated, given the increase in testing capacity throughout the United States since the 28 February detection of community transmission in Washington State. For the week ending 14 March, COVID-19 instances within the states with the very best estimated syndromic case detection fee (Washington, Nevada, and Michigan) solely captured approximately 1% of ILI surges in those states.
